This is just my opinion, but these Regulation changes strike me as ill considered.

For example, people with model gun pistols will need to join a pistol club and pretend to fire their model several times a year in order to meet their license requirements.

The rules for what needs to be registered are vague and contradictory, and seem to rely on the mood of the person down at Firearms Branch on the day.

By making owners of model guns jump through all the hoops of actual firearms ownership, people are going to say, well, I might as well just buy a real firearm. This is actually acting to encourage firearms ownership in the Community. I don't think that this is what the Government was aiming for.

It probably wouldn't be quite so messy if there had been any sort of public consultation, or if the regulations had been reviewed by Parliament.

Just my 2 cents worth.

By the sounds of their pitch, their main goals are to stop crime involving replicas and people converting them to live fire. I feel this should be aimed mainly at replica pistols.

How often do people hold up places with a replica (or real) SMG? Especially something the size of an MP-40, they're just too big to conceal.

Besides, anyone who has enough machining tools and skill to convert those weak replicas (MGC or Marushin) to actually live fire, could easily just make one from scratch (the only thing useable is the outside casing for looks).

Replica AK47s have been used by criminal gangs in SA.
It is associated with the "tough on crime" hard sell by the state government.
Unfortunately key elements of the criminal gangs legislation has been ruled unlawful, so these provisions target behaviour associated with criminal gangs.

Thats ok, like David said, Im going AGAINST my moral judgements, Im going and getting a firearms license. I'll get me a class H whilst Im at it, I dont mind popping off a few rounds of 44's or 45's...Im doing what the government wants us all to do...getting a firearms license. Why have harmless replicas when I can own real firers? Sure, I wont be able to keep my MP40, but I'll be able to own as many real pistols, rifles et cetera as I want. Maybe that will make Rann feel "safer". What a tool. He was better off leaving us collectors alone.

Craig, I would hold onto the MP-40 (until things are clarified). We might be able to get an exemption. Worse comes to worse, we'd just have to put a weld on the trigger and bolt (internally).
