During the war, the Ist-Stärke (actual strength) of a Fallschirmjägerkompanie varied dramatically from its Soll-Stärke (planned strength). Many wartime Fallschirmjägerkompanien were the size of platoons, often under 50 Offiziere, Unteroffiziere and Mannschaften (Officers, NCOs and Enlisted Men).

The basic combat unit of the Fallschirmjägerkompanie was the eight- to ten-man Fallschirmjägergruppe (Squad), centered on an lMG-Besatzung (leichte Machinengewehr or Light Machine Gun Team), the MG34 or MG42 and a Jägertrupp (Rifle Team).

A Gruppenführer (Squad Leader), usually an Oberjäger (Sergeant), commanded the eight to thirteen-man squad and directed the fire of the two or three-man lMG-Trupp, consisting of a Nr. 1, 2 and sometimes 3 (MG Gunner, Asst Gunner and Ammo Bearer). A Truppführer, usually a Gefreiter (Corporal), served as the Asst Squad Leader and commanded the Jägertrupp, normally consisting of himself and four to eight other Fallschirmjäger.

The typical Fallschirmjägerzug (Platoon) consisted of three to four Fallschirmjägergruppen and the Zugführertrupp (Platoon HQ), which normally contained the Zugführer (sometimes an Offizier, but usually an Unteroffizier), a stellvertretender Zugführer (Deputy Platoon Leader / Platoon Sergeant), and a Sani, Melder (Runner), perhaps an lMG-Gruppe, with one or more MG34/42, under the command of a Truppführer (Team Leader).

The typical Fallschirmjägerkompanie consisted of three to four Fallschirmjägerzüge, a schwerer Zug (Heavy Weapons Platoon) containing lMG and Granatewerfer, the Kompanieführer and Spieß, along with the Kompanietrupp (Company HQ), lead by the Kompanietruppführer and containing one or more Sani, Melder, Köche and other attached Mannschaften (here, Feldgendarmerie and Kriegsberichter).

For a parachute unit, we (RSA) have a desperate shortage of automatic weapons.

"The majority of men dropped with only pistols and long-handled knives as weapons, collecting their sub-machine guns and heavier weapons from separate containers. They were organised so that each section had over double the firepower of a British Bren group, with one light machine gun (Solothurn) eight tommy-gunners (Schmeisser) and two champion sharp-shooters with special long-barelled Mausers with telescopic sights, to compensate for the limited range of the tommy-guns.
The companies from the anti-tank batallion were distributed among the infantry and those in the first waves brought anti-tank 'rifles' with them... Four flame-throwers and their crews were also distributed throughout the 'Assault Regiment', as were a company of heavy, and of light, mortars.
Each company had a portable water sterilising apparatus"
