It probably should be noted that the common soldier might not always carry their weapon according to regulation anyway. Look at the guys with the K98's slung across their chest. You won't see that in any training manuals :)

Very good point Andy- we carried MG3's in the army (in our late teens/ early 20's) in this manner way before I ever saw a pic of Germans doing it! At least way before I took any real notice of pics of German soldiers doing it :lol:

Incidentally, I have seen Bundeswehr guys doing exactly the same. Unless drilling or marching "officially" with a weapon you will see some strange carry methods- all adapted for comfort, endurance and applicable to tactical situations.
