Well, as Ive been waiting for this section to appear, Ive been reading up on my favourite German Field Marshall: Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel.

Books worth reading:

*Rommel Papers by Erwin Rommel
*Rommel by Desmond Young
*Rommel as Military Commander by Ronald Lewin

These three books give an insider view to the man, the myth and the legend of the Desert Fox. You cant help but feel sorry for the way he was treated in the end, especially by Hitler, but in saying that, Hitler was a pure madman. I definitely suggest reading The Rommel Papers above the others, as most of it is written by Rommel himself in the form of letters home to his wife Lucie and son Manfred and reports to OKW. The book "Rommel" by Desmond Young is really well written too, being that Young was Rommel's adversary in the African Campaign and he got to see first hand the tactics of the great Field Marshall. Young follows Rommel's career from before the Great War up until his murder in 1944 by the nazis. I say murder, because that esentially is what it was. Charged with High Treason for his "role" in the conspiracy to murder Hitler, he was given the choice to commit suicide and become a national hero or face court and have his name and family destroyed....

The film "The Desert Fox" with James Mason playing Rommel is well done too, including the film "The Desert Rats" where he plays Rommel again. A must for anyone wanting to see him played with dignity.

A brilliant tactician who had the greatest respect for his enemies, a true soldier and a hero among his troops.
