EMU GULLY LAND AND AIR SPECTACULAR 2009

May Long Weekend 2009

Emu Gully - Near Helidon Qld.

The theme of this event is to be `ANZAC'. Therefore the scenarios shall have a 20th century focus. Essentially, there are three periods of the 20th Century being focused on. These are WW1 WW2 and Vietnam.

The main promoter of this event, Barry Rodgers (Director of Emu Gully), is a businessman, but he is also very patriotic and wants to create a weekend that combines, representation of the `ANZAC' values of courage, self-sacrifice, perseverance and mateship, - something he believes is lacking in our modern society - and fun/entertainment. The event shall also be used to promote a museum that is proposed for the site.

The three key points are:

Educational.

Entertainment.

Inspirational.

Emu Gully “Land and air spectacular”

An exciting action packed portrayal of our Anzac history.

Aim.
To provide an educational, entertaining and where possible an inspirational portrayal of our Anzac history. This to be done through a variety of specially staged sequenced re-enactments rather than an “ad hoc” presentation of militaria.

Educational.
The MC and guests will provide appropriate commentary on each of the re-enactments what they represent . Include their connection to the Anazac story. E.g. connection between the “Scotts” and the “Anzacs”…..Connection between the Light Horse the armoured units and the RAAF etc. Theatre and displays etc.

Entertainment.
Of course the re-enactments will have an entertaining factor in their own right. In addition separate activities such as GMC truck rides, Bren Gun carrier rides through a battlefield scenario, Mekong delta patrol, Long range desert patrol, animals that went to war nursery. Good food and music. Photo opportunities with actors, Simpson and his donkey, dress up as a Trooper etc. Not to mention the opportunity to visit the army campsites , vehicle and weapon displays. The idea is to provide something for the whole family.

Ian Sparke can have real role here with his crew to interacting with the crowd etc.

Band?

Inspirational.
Wherever possible promote the Anzac character values of courage, self-sacrifice, perseverance and mateship. Some examples, Simpson and his donkey, Light Horseman tending a wounded Turk, a Digger bringing back a wounded mate under fire, also the films shown in the theatre to demonstrate this.

Suggested Program.
0900hrs Gates open MP’s etc direct traffic in combination with other volunteers.

0930hrs Flag raising. With guard and bugler. Guard could consist of a mixture of sections of Light

Horse, Scotts, WW2, Vietnam all showing variations of drill for “present arms” etc.

Suggestion made that the flagpole be established on the edge of the gravel area about 10 m to the west of the big rock in front of the drill hall. This is where the Scotts and others will be involved in the flag raising and lowering ceremonies.

1000hrs The “Scotts.” With Caledonian pipe band, march past and presentation.

1020hrs Light Horse and associated WW1 period re-enactments or displays. May also have a WW1 A/C involved.

Suggestion that the Light Horse display some “skill at arms” routines including tentpegging and including a comedy tent dropping scenario with a Turk caught in the tent in night clothes complete with mistress….

1100hrs Morning re-enactment session finish move to general program inspect displays visit the theatre get some morning tea lunch. Take the kids for rides. Ian’s team interact with the participants.

1400hrs WW2. Tank battles, the big guns, etc.

“El Alamein” North African battle involving Africa Corps Lee Grant, Matilda Bren Gun carriers and German half tracks. Lee Grant gets knocked out, Matilda wins the day. Ian and others to script this. Significance of the El Alamein battle outlined by MC.

1445hrs “Contact front” Vietnam.

Ross Craig to work in combination with the Centurion Tank and M113 APC, featuring some of the fighting around Coral and Balmoral.

1515hrs Grand Finale even though slightly out of sequence, Spitfire versus Focke Wolfe.

1630hrs Finish.

Finish the day with the lowering of the flag two minutes silence and last post etc.

Same program to be run each day.

Love the Lee and the Matilda :) Remind me not to get a lift to work with the chap driving the Bren Gun Carrier! LOL

Excellent video's. I'm spewing non of us could make the trip up this year. Will it be an annual thing?

Andy

PS. Just as a footnote, go check that web page link I posted earlier to watch an advertising movie of the Emu Gully show and see the sort of thing that we missed. It certainly looks like it would have been a hoot to have been there.
