Very good point Andy- we carried MG3's in the army (in our late teens/ early 20's) in this manner way before I ever saw a pic of Germans doing it! At least way before I took any real notice of pics of German soldiers doing it
Incidentally, I have seen Bundeswehr guys doing exactly the same. Unless drilling or marching "officially" with a weapon you will see some strange carry methods- all adapted for comfort, endurance and applicable to tactical situations.
