Hello all fellow allied soldiers. Old friends (AUS, NZ, Canda etc), newer comrades (USA) and brand new friends who saw which way the wind was blowing (Italy).

If any of you have shortfalls in your equipment please post here so we can see what we can get in loaner gear or other. Do you all have a tent to sleep in etc. I know David S is lending one of his tents out already. Are all our guys covered.

I am not sure when we have the chance to do any practice in the lead up to the event, unless we can do some stuff at Reserve forces day?

I was speaking to Dan today and he explained how he was going to run the maneuvering of the section. Sounded like he was going to use a simple proven method (two bricks in the section, one of US and the other commonwealth). I will let him do the explaining as I do not want to steal his thunder.

If any of you have problems with other aspects of training (degrees of firearms readiness) in anything. Please post away so I and/or Dan can help sort it out.

Good luck men, get out there and thrash the Huns.

Okay everyone, it's now less than one month until the event. Consequently the late fee now applies to all outstanding camp fees. A lofty $5 is now added, bringing outstanding fees to $35.

Please send me a Postal Money Order (made out to me) , or give me cash.

(BTW, club fees are now payable. I have already sent on all the ALHF fees that I had. Please be advised that if you haven't paid your ALHF fees you will not be permitted to attend events.)

Ta.

Heres an idea of what you'll all need to bring to Nangwarry. It's aimed at the Germans, but bring the Allied alternative if you are coming as Allied.

Tentage (or organise to stay in someone elses tent).
Shaving gear (mirrors can be loaned from my kit). Razor, shaving soap, shaving brush.
Full equipment including battle pack( if you have one), trenching tool, FULL water bottle and mess kit (including fork, knife or spoon). Esbit stove/matches (available for purchase from the club at the event).
Cold weather gear. Great Coat, Torque, scarf, wool gloves (that sort of thing).
Wet weather gear. A spare zelt as a rain cape (if you have a spare),
Change of clothes (either period uniform or normal modern wear), towel, spare socks (all to be left in the cars).
Bedding. Blankets (at least two). Ground sheet (if you have one). Some straw and large felt ground sheets will be available at the event but bring a bail of straw if you have room in the car). One bail should do three or 4 people.
Rifle cleaning kit (if applicable).
Lighting Trench candles/Period Torch/Kero Lantern.

If I've left anything off, let me know (although most other things should be on the list of stuff to be supplied by the club).

This is not a hardcore event, so modern sleeping gear is fine, just hide it during the day.

I do not want anyone getting hypothermia so please exercise common sense and make sure you have adequate tentage and sleeping gear.

Bad news, it seems that Douglas Draeger has withdrawn from this event. This means that there will have to be some ammendments to the scenarios.

Operational Orders Nangwarry Tactical Event – DRAFT 1.2

ALLIED NCO VERSION

Non-Commissioned Officers Eyes Only

These orders are issued by OKW and the Allied Supreme Command via your liaison Officers, and cover military operations in the Italian Campaign. You are to consider these Orders to be Secret and Restricted. Information contained herein is to be made available on a NEED TO KNOW BASIS ONLY.

1. Commanding Officer Allied Forces

The Commanding Officer for Allied Personnel in this operational area is Captain Michael Atkinson (UK). All orders and instructions are to be issued from his Command Post.

1.1 Commanding Officer German Forces

The Commanding Officer of the Axis (in this case German) forces in this area is RESTRICTED. All orders and instructions will be issued from his Command Post.

2. Operational Considerations

On day one field artillery is available on request. For the purposes of these engagements field artillery is considered to have been deployed against any unit moving over open terrain that is fired upon by opposing forces. Such units are then considered to have been eliminated and will need to return to their start points before resuming operations.

On day two no field artillery is available, as it has been deployed to another sector.

During operations there is to be no fraternization between Allied & Axis forces as scenarios conclude. NCOs are to gather their men and move off to their next destination. All debriefs will occur in camp, following the cessation of hostilities.

Any POWs taken remain so until moved out of the operational area, shot, or escape.

Dead/wounded remain so until the skirmish has ended. The victors resurrect their casualties and move off to their next start point. The losing team may then resurrect as a new unit and move to their start point.

DAY 1

3. Scenario 1. Von Ryan’s Express, minus trains & Sinatra

Allied troops being held in an Italian POW camp have discovered that Italy has withdrawn from the Axis and the camp guards have deserted their posts. As Italy has become a co-belligerent an Italian soldier has been sent to assist a party of former POWs back to Allied lines.

As the POWs (except for the Italian) are unarmed, a paratrooper has been dropped in with additional weapons. The Italian soldier has the rough drop point and must guide the POWs to the Paratrooper & weapons. Once rearmed the Allies are to advance towards allied lines.

3.1 Allied Orders

These orders are conveyed via your Italian Liaison. Italy has withdrawn from the Axis and has become a Co-belligerent against the Germans. However Fascist die hards remain loyal to the Germans, so approach Italians with caution. You are ordered to gather as many Allied POWs as possible and go with your Italian Liaison (there will be several parties departing from the POW camp in order to increase overall chances of success). Your Italian Liaison will take you to Map Reference A13. In this area a Paratrooper will have been dropped with weapons and ammunition for your party.

You are to rendezvous with this paratrooper, arm yourselves and then proceed immediately towards the Allied lines. German Infantry and Paratroopers are reported to be in the area. You are instructed to avoid contact if possible and withdraw from the area as quickly as possible and make contact with Allied forces. Warning: There may be a minefield located with the area of operations.

Start Point: Your start point is Map Ref C11.
Weapons: Your weapons and a Paratrooper are located at Map Ref A13.
Allied Lines: The Allied lines are represented by the Southern Fence Line.

By Order: Capt. M. Atkinson

3.2 Axis Orders

RESTRICTED.

4. Scenario 2: Retrieve Intelligence

During the confusion of the Italian defection and Operation Axis, a German Officer carrying important military documents was killed by Italian Partisans. They were ignorant of the documents and have left them on the body.

Italian sympathizers have advised the Allies of the body’s location, and the significance of the Officer and his documents has been realized. Allies have dispatched a patrol to secure the documents and return them to friendly lines.

4.1 Allied Orders

Italian Partisans report having ambushed and killed a German Courier. Unfortunately they did not realise that documents being carried by him are of significant tactical importance to us. As such they remain with the corpse.

You are ordered to proceed with all due speed to the location of the body, retrieve the documents, and then bring them back to friendly lines and turn them over to our Intelligence Officers.

Allied Start Point: Map Ref E1.
German Corpse believed to be at: Map Ref D15.
Allied Lines: Represented by Southern fence line.

By Order: Capt. M. Atkinson

4.2 Axis Orders

RESTRICTED.

LUNCH

5. Scenario 3: The Mail Always Gets Through

Sensitive German orders must be relayed through the operational area in order to facilitate successful Axis operations elsewhere. German forces must transport documents to a waiting truck, which will then transport them to an airfield where they will be flown out.

Allies must intercept and capture or destroy the orders. Destruction of the German Transport truck (somewhere in the D.E,F,5,6,7 coords).with Hawkins mine or Gammon Grenade also constitutes success of your objective. If none of the above are achieved then see below.

5.1 Allied Orders

The Germans are believed to be attempting to transport via vehicle some important operational orders through this sector. Italian Partisans are uncovered some information about the intended transport route. They are believed to be entering our operational area somewhere around Map Ref H6 or H7. and they are believed to be attempting to reach an airfield at Map Ref K7.(Vehicle carpark)

The airfield is too heavily defended to assault with forces available. You are therefore instructed to assault the forces involved in transporting the documents. You will then capture or destroy the documents before withdrawing back towards Allied lines. How you achieve this is left to your discretion.

Allied Start Point: Map Ref: I6.
Suspected location Axis convoy is coming from the West.
Enemy Airfield location: Map Ref K7 (the carpark).
Allied Lines: Represented by the Southern fence line.

By Order: Capt. M. Atkinson.

5.2 Axis Orders

RESTRICTED.

6. Scenario 4. Patrol

Forces are sent on patrol. Sooner or later they run into each other. They can try to ambush the other, or literally just collide. It depends on how things unfold on the day.

6.1 Allied Orders

You are ordered to patrol our operational area. There are believed to be enemy forces in the area and you are directed to engage targets of opportunity, but to preserve your force if you encounter a superior force. Friendly Italian forces are in the area and may be attached to your command.

Approximately 15 minutes into the operation you are directed to proceed through Map Ref C7 to investigate reports of Italian Partisans in the area. If possible make contact and escort back to Allied lines.

Start Point: Map Ref I4.
Possible Partisan location: Map Ref C7.
Allied Lines: Represented by the Southern fence line.

By Order: Capt. M. Atkinson

6.2 Axis Orders

RESTRICTED.

7. Scenario 5. Let ‘em come!

An Allied force is ordered to hold fixed defenses. The Germans want to take the fixed defenses. This might get ugly.

7.1 Allied Orders

You are ordered to defend Map Ref: B4. You are to deploy skirmishers and set pickets who are to observe for signs of the enemy. If they observe enemy activity they are to immediately withdraw and alert your main force.

You are to hold your position.

Allied defenses: Map Ref B4. (near campsite)

By Order: Capt. M. Atkinson

7.2 Axis Orders

RESTRICTED.

8. Scenario 6. Counter Attack!

Following the assault on the Allied positions the German forces withdraw to an improvised defensive line some way away from the Allied line to regroup.

The Allies attack with a view towards routing or destroying the German force.

8.1 Allied Orders

We have reports that the Germans have withdrawn not far from our present positions. You are to move forward and smash them.

That is all.

By Order: Capt. M. Atkinson

8.2 Axis Orders

RESTRICTED.

DAY 2

9. Scenario 7. The Ambush.

The Germans are deployed on a resupply mission, and need to move a vehicle with supplies from their start point over to a point near the swamp.

The Allies want to destroy it and the escort.

9.1 Allied Orders

German forces are believed to be convoying ammunition supplies towards the swamp near Map Ref C15. You are instructed to scout their likely route of advance. Set an ambush, and destroy the supply convoy.

Start Point: B4.
Enemy Suspected at: C15.

By Order: Capt. M. Atkinson

9.2 Axis Orders

RESTRICTED.

10. Scenario 8. Fighting Withdrawal.

German Forces are withdrawing from this Sector. The German forces are going to make life hard for the Allied Forces.

10.1 Allied Orders

You will advance as rapidly as possibly towards your objective at Map Ref B3. You may engage enemy forces encountered, however your main objective is to seize an encampment located at that Map Ref and deny it’s use to the enemy.

Doing so may well eliminate Axis operations in this sector. Ammunition is running low, so secure your objective before running out of ammunition.

Start Point: Map Ref: C15.
Objective Point: Map Ref: B3 (the camp site).

By Order: Capt. M. Atkinson

10.2 Axis Orders

RESTRICTED.

AXIS NCO VERSION

These orders are issued by OKW and the Allied Supreme Command via your liaison Officers, and cover military operations in the Italian Campaign. You are to consider these Orders to be Secret and Restricted. Information contained herein is to be made available on a NEED TO KNOW BASIS ONLY.

1. Commanding Officer Allied Forces

The Commanding Officer for Allied Personnel in this operational area is RESTRICTED. All orders and instructions are to be issued from his Command Post.

1.1 Commanding Officer German Forces

The Commanding Officer of the Axis (in this case German) forces in this area is Hauptman Wilhelm Kiefer.

Italy has become a co-belligerent of the Allies. There have been mass escapes of POWs.

There also seems to have been some sort of airdrop.

The German objective is to eliminate any Allied Forces in the area.

3.1 Allied Orders

RESTRICTED.

3.2 Axis Orders

There has been major treachery on the part of the Italian Government. Benito Mussolini has been overthrown and Italy has withdrawn from the Axis and declared War on Germany. Operation Axis is now in effect. All Italian troops are to be disarmed until their loyalty can be determined (some Italians remain loyal to the Axis). Approach all Italians with caution.

POWs have been released from Italian camps in the area. You are to take steps to neutralize these groups and prevent them from rejoining the main Allied force. Warning: There may be a minefield in the area.

You have one squad of Heer and one squad of Fallschirmjager. These will arrive on the field from different start points. It is up to you as to their further deployment.

Start Point Heer: Map Ref F19.
Start Point Fallschirmjager: Map Ref B3.
Allied Lines: The Allied lines are represented by the Southern Fence Line.
Some form of airdrop was observed at approx Map Ref A14/B14. You are to investigate this as part of your mission. Engage and eliminate enemy if sighted.

By Order: Hauptman W. Kiefer.

4. Scenario 2: Retrieve Intelligence

During the confusion of the Italian defection and Operation Axis, a German Officer carrying important military documents was killed by Italian Partisans. They were ignorant of the documents and have left them on the body.

Italian sympathizers have advised the Axis of the body’s location, and the significance of the Officer and his documents has been realized. A patrol has been dispatched to secure the documents and return them to friendly lines.

4.1 Allied Orders

RESTRICTED.

4.2 Axis Orders

We have just learned that Italian gangsters have murdered a German Officer, transporting sensitive documents between Commands. It is believed that the documents remain with his body.

You will immediately proceed with all available forces and secure the remains and the documents. It is vital to return these documents to our lines. You are to execute any Italians believed to have been involved in this crime.

German Start Point: Map Ref –wherever they find themselves at the end of scenario one.
Remains believed to be at: Map Ref D15.
German Lines: Represented by the Northern Fence Line.

By Order: Hauptman W. Kiefer.

LUNCH

5. Scenario 3: The Mail Always Gets Through

Sensitive German orders must be relayed through the operational area in order to facilitate successful Axis operations elsewhere. German forces must transport documents to a waiting truck, which will then transport them to an airfield where they will be flown out. Axis must protect both the truck and the orders. The Axis NCO may select the start points for his forces. (most likely from wherever the documents are secured-either from the dead German officer or if document is captured by the enemy, from wherever it is retrieved from the enemy).

5.1 Allied Orders

RESTRICTED.

5.2 Axis Orders

A vital communiqué is to be transported through our sector. You are ordered to retrieve this communiqué. From there you will proceed to Map Ref D7 (or there about) and rendezvous with a vehicle waiting there. The communiqué will then be transferred to this vehicle and driven directly to the airfield located at Map Ref J8 (carpark) to be sent on to it’s destination.

You will make sure that the communiqué will be safely transported through our sector. You may deploy and task your troops as you see fit, except that the communiqué must be collected and relayed to the vehicle at Map Ref D7. The vehicle is considered expendable; however the communiqué MUST be delivered to the airfield. If the vehicle is not found to be captured or destroyed, it must be the primary method of transporting the communiqué.

Communiqué Start Point: Map Ref (as discussed above)
Vehicle Location: Map Ref D7.
Airfield Location: Map Ref J8.(The car park.)

By Order: Hauptman W. Kiefer

6. Scenario 4. Patrol

Both forces are sent on patrol. Sooner or later they run into each other. They can try to ambush the other, or literally just collide. It depends on how things unfold on the day.

6.1 Allied Orders

RESTRICTED.

6.2 Axis Orders

You are ordered to patrol this sector with a view of denying it’s use to the enemy. You will arrive in this area via truck. You are to engage enemy forces encountered, but act to preserve your command. Enemy Italian forces are suspected to be in the area.

Approximately 15 minutes into the operation you are directed to proceed through Map Ref C5 to investigate reports of Italian civilians. If encountered arrest any Italian civilians for use as hostages, and convey them back to our main lines.

Start Point: Map Ref D12.
Possible Civilian Location: C5.
Axis Lines: Represented by the Northern fence line.

By Order: Hauptman W. Kiefer

7. Scenario 5. Let ‘em come!

An Allied force is ordered to hold fixed defenses. The Germans want to take the fixed defenses. This might get ugly.

7.1 Allied Orders

RESTRICTED.

7.2 Axis Orders

It is reported that there is an enemy force operating in the viscinity of Map Ref: B4. You are to move all available forces to that area, search for signs of the enemy, and engage any enemy forces located with the aim of destroying them.

Start Point: Map Ref D13.
Suspected enemy location: Map Ref B4.

By Order: Hauptman W. Kiefer.

8. Scenario 6. Counter Attack!

Following the assault on the Allied positions the German forces withdraw to an improvised defensive line some way away from the Allied line to regroup.

The Allies attack with a view towards routing or destroying the German force.

8.1 Allied Orders

RESTRICTED.

8.2 Axis Orders

You are ordered to withdraw to a safe position and regroup your forces. You should make basic precautions with regards to defense; however we are not expecting an Allied advance after the days heavy fighting.

If possible you should consider sending scouts forward to scout Allied preparations for the following days activities.

By Order: Hauptman W. Kiefer

DAY 2

9. Scenario 7. The Ambush.

The Germans are deployed on a resupply mission, and need to move a vehicle with supplies from their start point over to a point near the swamp.

9.1 Allied Orders

RESTRICTED.

9.2 Axis Orders

You are to transport ammunition supplies via vehicle from Map Ref F5 towards a site near the swamp at Map Ref B17. You are to ensure that the vehicle safely arrives at its intended destination. You are to use your own judgement in selecting a route, avoid detection by enemy forces if possibly..

Start Point: Map Ref F5.
Destination Point: Map Ref B17.

By Order: Hauptman W. Kiefer.

10. Scenario 8. Fighting Withdrawal.

German Forces are withdrawing from this Sector. The German forces are to set a wide picket line with the objectives of delaying and harassing advancing Allied Forces.

10.1 Allied Orders

RESTRICTED.

10.2 Axis Orders

Forces from this sector are being withdrawn for redeployment at several critical points further along the line. Your mission is to harass and delay any Allied forces that may attempt to break through. Hit them with whatever you have and then withdraw. You are instructed to keep your force intact, fall back, and redeploy to hit any advancing force.

Intelligence suggests that the enemy may be low on ammunition, so it may be possible to halt the Allied advance if you can get them to expend enough ammunition. However we are low on ammunition as well, so husband your resources.

Start Point: Map Ref: C13.
Defend Objective: Map Ref B3 ( the camp site).

By Order: Hauptman W. Kiefer
